OLT

OLT, also called an optical line terminal, is a device which serves as the service provider endpoint of a passive optical network. The function is equivalent to the switch or router in the traditional communication network. It provides two main functions:

1. to perform conversion between the electrical signals used by the service provider's equipment and the fiber optic signals used by the passive optical network.

2. to coordinate the multiplexing between the conversion devices on the other end of that network (called either optical network terminal or optical network units).

The wellknowed OLT brand is HUAWEI, ZTE, NOKIA, Samsung, Ericsson,etc..

ODN

ODN, full name is Optical Distribution Network. It is a physical optical transmission channel between the OLT and ONU. It is used for bidirectional transmission of optical signals. It is usually composed of optical fiber and cable, optical connector, optical splitter and supporting equipment for installing and connecting these devices.

It takes many different scenarios to get from OLT to ONU/ONT.

After coming out of OLT, the cable will pass through outdoor underground, outdoor street and outdoor pole & hanging wall to complete the coverage of home pass. In the outdoor underground, SSC(Spliting and Splicing Closure, Joint Box) is usually used to continuously extend the cable, or branch to other places. The outdoor installation method is usually buried in the ground. The environment is harsh and the protection level of the equipment must be high, generally IP68.

When the optical cable enters the house through the outdoor pole & hanging wall, FAT (fiber access terminal) or SSC is usually used to realize the connection and fiber distribution functions. Due to the outdoor environment, the protection requirements are high, and IP55 or IP65 is usually required.

After the outdoor connection is completed, the optical cable will enter the user scene such as high buildings or villas. At this point, the fiber optic connection and wiring is usually carried out through FAT. FAT is usually installed on a wall. Because it is an indoor environment, the protection level is generally required to be IP43. After the drop cable enters the room, it is usually terminated on the optical fiber terminal box, which is convenient for the jumper to connect to ONT.

In villa scenarios, to distinguish indoor and outdoor optical interfaces, a Terminal Box (TB) is usually installed at the entrance of the villa to connect to the Access Terminal Box (ATB) indoors. TB is installed by hanging on the wall outdoors. IP level IP55 or IP65. ATB is usually installed in an indoor wall or built-in wall, and the protection level requires IP4X, which completes the end-to-end connection between OLT and ONT.

ONU

The optical fiber is connected to the ONU through the passive optical network equipment (ODN). After the branch is connected to the ONU, the ONU acts as an optical port. The user port is used as the Ethernet port to directly access the Internet.

ONU or ONT

ONU full name is Optical Network Unit, ONT full name is Optical Network Terminal.

In the different environment, the comparison of ONT and ONU is different.

In the FTTH, ONU refers to an optical network device connected to the branch fiber of the ODN. ONT refers to the optical network device connected to the end user (that is, our home).

When the carrier fiber enters the home, there will be a fiber-optic modem. We usually say that the optical cat is connected to the branch fiber of the ODN and also connected to the end user. It can be called ONU or ONT.

So, at this time, ONU=ONT.
